Chic Miniature’s Latin flecked swing, undulating bass lines and delicate samples infuse a sound long on sparkle and grooviness, an effect of their Montréal/Córdoba upbringings – the duo of Guillaume Coutu-Dumont and Ernesto Ferreyra have a musical genealogy that goes back a decade to when both were based in Montréal. Now, after a few years concentrating on solo pursuits on different continents, they’ve reunited as a live act and in the studio.

Ferryra cut his electronic teeth in Argentina, first as a radio host in his hometown of Córdoba, where by age 14 he was already playing as a DJ in clubs. His rhythm lust landed him in Mexico City, where he made his producing debut, and led him to join the critical mass of electronic artists in Montréal at the turn of the last decade. His intricate approach to recording and DJing, at the confluence of Latin grooves and taut Northern minimalism, attracted the interest of Cadenza boss and tech-house mentor Luciano, who invited him to release material on his heavyweight label. A consummate musician with a proclivity for exuberant, worldly rhythms, jazz, gospel and techno, Coutu-Dumont has a background in electroacoustics and percussion. He released early recordings as surreal duo EGG (with Artificiel’s Julien Roy) before putting his funk wizardry to wax on Musique Risquée, Oslo and Circus Company with solo releases, and in several other collaborative projects.

Chic Miniature bloomed in 2005, releasing several 12”s and cultivating a live act that combined the sweetness of their recordings with the immediacy of performance. In 2007, as part of a collective exodus of Canadian artists, both men relocated to Berlin where their careers matured and their globetrotting established their individual international reputations. Last year, on the eve of Coutu-Dumont’s return to Montréal, they reanimated Chic Miniature and began playing and recording again, with a series of three self released EPS expected later this year. MUTEK is thrilled to have them close this year’s festival, treating festivalgoers to the perfect dessert for the end of this edition’s big meal.
